Tents
Mostly light 1 and 2-person tents you can carry in, plus a big one for the campsite. Each pitches without fuss and holds up in UK wind and rain.
- Wild Country Helm Compact 2 and 3. Our all-rounders. Freestanding, stable in wind and quick to pitch, with two doors and two porches.
- Wild Country Zephyros Compact 2. Low and stable, and it packs small. The fly and inner pitch together, so the inside stays dry in rain.
- Wild Country Halny Elite 2. Our lightest 2-person tent, from 1.45kg, with a single pole that's quick to pitch. For fast, light trips.
- MSR Hubba NX Solo and Hubba Hubba LT 1. Solo tents from just over 1kg, with room to sit up. Our picks for long walks where every gram counts.
- MSR Elixir 1 and 2. Roomier than an ultralight tent, with colour-coded poles and a footprint included. Easy for a first trip.
- Wild Country Helm Blizzard Elite 2. Fully four-season, for winter and exposed pitches.
- Big Agnes Big House 4. Campsite comfort. Tall walls you can sit up and change in. Too big to carry far.
Sleeping mats
Most of the cold at night comes up from the ground, so every mat we hire is insulated.
- Big Agnes Divide Insulated. R-value 4 and 3.25 inches thick. We've tested it on our own trips and it stands up to repeat hire, so it's our core mat.
- Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated. R-value 4.8, lighter and packs smaller. For colder nights from early spring to late autumn.
- Therm-a-Rest ProLite Apex. Self-inflating and just 620g. Small enough to pack inside your rucksack.
- Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro MAX. 7.6cm of foam and a full 64cm width. For campsites and van trips, where comfort beats weight.
Sleeping bags
Something for warm nights and cold ones. Choose by the comfort rating, not the limit.
- Snugpak Travelpak 3. Light, with a built-in mosquito net. For summer, festivals and travel.
- Big Agnes Anthracite 20. Rated to -6°C, with a hood and draught collar. Synthetic fill copes with damp. Our three-season bag.
- Mammut Ajungilak Kompact. Winter-rated synthetic fill that stays warm when damp and dries quickly. For cold trips.
Backpacks and stoves
- Sierra Designs Flex Trail and Flex Capacitor. Expand from 40 to 60 litres, so one pack does a long weekend or a full week.
- Rab Muon 50 and Exped Lightning 45. Light packs with roll-tops and supportive backs, for carrying a full kit without the weight.
- Vango Contour 65. 65 litres with a back that adjusts to your height in seconds. Our pick for DofE and first trips.
- OEX Heiro Solo stove. Stove and 600ml pot in one, with push-button ignition. A small gas canister packs inside the pot.
Triathlon
- Orca Athlex Float V2. Buoyant Yamamoto neoprene that lifts your legs into a better swimming position. Ideal for a first race or a weaker swim.
- Orca trisuits. One suit for the swim, bike and run.
